October 13, 2010 – Unveiling of Our Emily:
On a sunny day in Women’s History month, over 400 people gathered on the lawns of the Fairmont Empress for the unveiling of Our Emily. In attendance were special guests Chief Andy Thomas, Chief Robert Sam, Jan Ross “In Emily’s Words”, sculptor Barbara Paterson and host Vicki Gabereau. Acknowledgement and thanks were given to all the Donors and the hundreds of Canadians who helped honour Emily Carr with “Our Emily.”
Joining in the celebration were Girl Guides from Colwood Group 1 and 2, the Reynolds High School Band Ensemble with director Dave Flello and three “Emilys” who gave mementos of the day to the assembled crowd. The bronze book plaque for the statue was unveiled by twins Chloe and Macey Richards, who had contributed funds from their lemonade stand, and Alexandrea Delos Reyes, a 12-year-old artist whose first ever sale of a painting supported Our Emily fundraising. Our Emily was unveiled by Mayor Dean Fortin, the Donors, sculptor Barbara Paterson and the Foundation President.
Following the unveiling, the Girl Guides served slices of cakes iced with Emily Carr scenes while the international award winning Garden City Chorus performed some of their favorite songs. This day brought to a conclusion the largest fundraising effort ($440,751.12) by the Parks and Recreation Foundation of Victoria in its 17-year history.
